Summary
The rocky shores of the north-east Atlantic have been long studied. Our focus is from Gibraltar to Norway plus the Azores and Iceland. Phylogeographic processes shape biogeographic patterns of biodiversity. Long-term and broadscale studies have shown the responses of biota to past climate fluctuations and more recent anthropogenic climate change. Inter- and intra-specific species interactions along sharp local environmental gradients shape distributions and community structure and hence ecosystem functioning. Shifts in domination by fucoids in shelter to barnacles/mussels in exposure are mediated by grazing by patellid limpets. Further south fucoids become increasingly rare, with species disappearing or restricted to estuarine refuges, caused by greater desiccation and grazing pressure. Mesoscale processes influence bottom-up nutrient forcing and larval supply, hence affecting species abundance and distribution, and can be proximate factors setting range edges (e.g., the English Channel, the Iberian Peninsula). Impacts of invasive non-native species are reviewed. Knowledge gaps such as the work on rockpools and host–parasite dynamics are also outlined.

We are interested in utilizing the thermo-switchable properties of precursor poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) polymers to develop capacitor dielectrics that will fail at specific temperatures due to the material irreversibly switching from an insulator to a conducting polymer. By utilizing different leaving groups on the polymer main chain, the temperature at which the polymer transforms into a conductor can be varied over a range of temperatures. Electrical characterization of thin-film capacitors prepared from several precursor PPV polymers indicates that these materials have good dielectric properties until they reach elevated temperatures, at which point conjugation of the polymer backbone effectively disables the device. Here, we present the synthesis, dielectric processing, and electrical characterization of a new thermo-switchable polymer dielectric.

Control over the dimensions of nanostructured materials is of critical importance for proper utilization in devices. There has been a number of systems reported that utilize amphiphilic molecules that organize themselves into nanotubes or tubules, as well as various polymers that can assemble into tubular nanoscale structures. The organization of these components into nanotubes is mainly driven by hydrophobic effects of the substituents in particular solvents, which contain polar and apolar portions. While studying a modification to a previously reported GC module that normally forms rosette nanotubes (RNTs) with diameters in the 4nm range, we discovered that a small modification led to the formation of nanotubes with diameters 10 times of that expected. These structures were studied by SEM, TEM, and AFM in an attempt to uncover the mechanism of their formation. It was determined that these chiral organic molecules first self-assemble into sheet-like structures, but due to an inherent curvature of the sheet, they roll into large nanotubules. This new type of self-assembled nanotube may have applications in host-guest chemistry and as templates for other nanoparticles and materials.

A newly designed module was synthesized and found to self-assemble into rosette nanotubes (RN) in both water and methanol. Characterization using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) established the formation of analogous RNs in both solvents. However, the chiroptical outcome of the assemblies, observed by circular dichrosim (CD) spectroscopy, was found to be mirror image based solely on the solvent used. Preliminary molecular modeling studies indicated the formation of M and P helical rosette nanotubes, in agreement with the experimental observations. This work represents the first example of solvent-controlled helicity in a self-assembling supramolecular system.

The authors modified the Centers for Disease Control's guideline for disease-specific isolation precautions to a hospital computerized information system. Entering a suspected diagnosis selected from the isolation option on computer terminals generated: 1) a printout listing the isolation instructions, infective material(s), and persons who should avoid exposure; 2) an order for the appropriate supplies; 3) a patient charge based on the supplies required; and 4) an option for stopping, changing, or listing the orders. In order to implement this system, both extensive in-service training for nurses and efforts to change ordering practices of physicians were necessary.
Prevalence surveys before and after computerization were used to evaluate the new system. Combined surveys showed that isolation was ordered for only 21% of patients when indicated. Failure to isolate was identified as a significant problem. As a consequence, continuous surveillance and consultation of all infected patients were instituted, resulting in isolation orders for 81% when indicated. The computerized disease-specific system has resulted in better and more accurate use of isolation, probably due to in service education and surveillance efforts.
